Help Wanted!
 
Volunteers are currently needed for the following activities and/or programs:

  • Reading and Math Helpers Needed

    Make a difference by helping a student build stronger reading and math skills!
     
    Pick the time and day that works best for you -- starting as early as 7am and running as late as 6pm. There are students who would benefit from your help!
     
    This is a great opportunity for a neighbor or a retired person, too, so if you know someone who wants to help kids succeed, let us know!

Not sure what you'd like to do? Please email the PTA VP for Volunteers for guidance. Just let us know what you're interests are and what your availability is and we'll contact you with some suggestions! Simply send your email to volunteers@murdockpta.org.
Please know that any amount of time you can share is greatly appreciated.
 
Here are some typical ways in which parents (and grandparents, businesses, and neighbors) volunteer their time at Murdock:
 
 
VOLUNTEERING IN THE CLASSROOM OR WORKING DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS
Please contact your child's teacher to find out how you might help. Fill out a volunteer application form and return it to the school office and request a laminated volunteer badge. Watch for requests for help throughout the year from your teacher's room parent, your child's teacher, and from PTA program and event chairs.
 
CHAPERONING A FIELD TRIP
Please contact your child's teacher to find out which field trips need parent chaperons. Fill out a volunteer application and return it to the school office and ask whether or not you will need to be fingerprinted.
 
HELPING AT A SCHOOL OR PTA EVENT
Please contact the PTA chairperson for the event and let them know you'd like to help. They'll typically have a sign-up sheet or an online sign-up form for you to fill out. Don't know anyone? No worries! Not only do "many hands make for light work," but you'll get to meet other parents with similar interests in the process!
 
SERVING AS A ROOM PARENT
 
At the start of each school year, a room parent interest form will be sent home describing the role of the room parent. Serving as a room parent or room contact parent is a great way to get to know other parents and your child's classmates. For a list of current room parents, click here.
 
If you are interested in serving as room parent, please contact the teacher, the principal or the PTA Room Parent Coordinator. Room parents work with teachers to coordinate volunteers for classroom activities. Room parents also work with the teacher to coordinate the items needed for the grade-level end of year party. Room parents help communicate PTA and school information to the parents in their classroom to help all parents feel connected. Room parents work with the students to help them show, in a heart-felt way, their appreciation for their teacher during Staff/Teacher Appreciation in May. Room parents should have a desire to work with a diverse group of people and recognize and respect confidentiality issues. 
 
 
SERVING AS A PTA OFFICER
 
Officers are elected each spring and can serve a maximum of two consecutive years in any one office. A nominating committee is formed in January to identify potential candidates and present a slate of officers at the April PTA General Association Meeting. Talk to a current officer to learn more about the duties of that office or help with one of the activities that officer oversees.
